JiraTeamLens for Jira
How do I add a quick filter by team to a Jira board?
To filter a Jira board by team, add a quick filter whose JQL is a Team field clause: "Team[Team]" = <team id>. Quick filters are plain JQL, and Atlassian's JQL for the Team field compares team ids (UUIDs), not team names, so you need each team's id first. You add the filter in Configure board > Quick Filters, which needs space admin or board admin rights.
Short answer: open the team's profile, copy the last part of the URL after/team/, then on the board go to ••• > Configure board > Quick Filters and add a filter with the JQL"Team[Team]" = 36885b3c-1bf0-4f85-a357-c5b858c31de4(your id). One filter per team; the buttons appear above the board.
Checked 3 Nov 2026: Atlassian Support "Configure quick filters" and Atlassian Developer "Team field in Jira REST API" (last updated 15 Sep 2026), both read 3 Nov 2026. We have not built these filters on a live board for this article; the steps follow those pages.
What a quick filter is
Atlassian's page describes quick filters as a way to "further filter the collection of work items appearing on a Scrum or Kanban board". The board's own filter decides what the board can show; a quick filter is a button that narrows it further. Each one is a JQL clause. Jira ships two by default: Only My Work items (assignee = currentUser()) and Recently Updated (updatedDate >= -1d).
Two limits from the same page:
- Who: you must be a space admin for the board's location or a board admin for that board.
- Where: the page covers boards in company-managed spaces. Team-managed boards are configured differently.
The page also notes a rollout that renames quick filters to Custom filters in the new board views, with an updated way to configure them. The JQL below is the same either way.
Step 1: get each team's id
The Team field's JQL needs the team id. Atlassian's developer page says to open the team's profile page and copy the last segment of the URL after /team/. It looks like 36885b3c-1bf0-4f85-a357-c5b858c31de4. Keep a small list of team name and id pairs; you will paste them once per filter.
Step 2: add the filter
- Go to the board.
- Select more (•••) > Configure board.
- Open the Quick Filters tab.
- Add a filter: a name such as
Platform team, and the JQL:
"Team[Team]" = 36885b3c-1bf0-4f85-a357-c5b858c31de4
Repeat for each team. Some useful variants, using the operators Atlassian lists for the Team field (=, !=, IS, IS NOT, IN, NOT IN):
"Team[Team]" in (36885b3c-..., 9f1c2a77-...) -- two teams in one button
"Team[Team]" is EMPTY -- work nobody has claimed yet
"Team[Team]" != 36885b3c-... -- everyone except one team
The is EMPTY filter is worth adding on any shared board: it shows the work that will drop out of every team-based report because it has no team.
Why a pasted id is fragile
A filter that reads "Team[Team]" = 36885b3c-... tells the next admin nothing about which team it is; only the filter's name does. When a team is replaced by a new one (for example after a reorganisation), the old id stays in the filter and it quietly shows nothing. Name the filters clearly and review them when teams change.
A name-based version
We make TeamLens for Jira, which adds two JQL functions that work anywhere JQL does, including board filters and quick filters:
issue in teamIn("Platform") -- one team, by name
issue in teamIn("Platform*") -- every team whose name starts with Platform
issue in noTeam() -- Team field empty
Names match case-insensitively, and a team id is still accepted. The app resolves names from a team directory it refreshes every hour, so a team created or renamed in the last hour may need a moment before teamIn() finds it. Details on the JQL functions page. The plain "Team[Team]" clauses above work without the app.
FAQ
Can I type the team's name in the Team field JQL?
Not in the Atlassian clause: the developer page says "You will need to specify a Team ID to compare with." Use the id, or an app function that resolves names.
I cannot see Configure board. Why?
Quick filters need space admin or board admin rights for that board. Ask one of them to add the filter, or to make you a board admin.
Where do I set the team on the work items first?
The Team field must be on the space's layout. See add the Team field to Jira work items, and for bulk back-filling, set the Team field with the REST API or from the assignee with Automation.
